Somehow, we overlooked updating this page!

Since the whole website is being replaced by Jan 2012, this won't be updated...

While we don’t yet offer a Blog or newsfeed on this website, you can be assured that something fresh and exciting is happening in relation to our work in NYC at almost any time. Below find a recent overview. Later, please check GreenMap.org’s Blog, Articles, Awards and Newsletters in the News section, where the most current items are linked.

In 2007, we:

• received an Environmental Quality Award from the US EPA, region 2, in recognition for our positive impact on the metro area. The US State Department also recognized our contributions to their international visitors’ program with a Certificate of Appreciation. Our Green Apple Maps were selected for inclusion in articles (including
Treehugger, Green Moms, Worldchanging, Ins & Outs of Long Island City and others), TV (RNN regional TV, Cornell’s eClips) and new books (Cool Hunting, our own Mapping our Common Ground (2nd English edition) and even the 2007 Farmer’s Almanac), too.

• created and released a series of six educational Energy & Environment Exploration Modules designed for NYC high school students. Younger and older students have downloaded them too, and are using them for neighborhood field trips and mapping exercises that expand upon the concepts in our energy-themed map.

• updated the digital version of our Powerful Green Map that charts energy resources citywide, adding the 35 new LEED and Energy Star buildings with the help of the USGBC (the updated version was given to dozens of capital city mayors who took part in May’s Climate Change C-40 conference!). Download it here! We also distributed thousands of printed copies in classrooms, conferences and public events/locations citywide.

• updated, redesigned and distributed our second edition of the Compost Green Map of Manhattan. We also added to the case studies and related information on this most efficient form of recycling.

• provided many opportunities for the public to learn about the Green Apple Map when we presented our work or tabled at venues ranging from NYC Parks’ Grow Together in the Bronx to the BCUE’s Green Brooklyn Day to Step It Up’s climate care rally in Manhattan. We gave presentations at several universities and held 3 open houses at our East Village global HQ. We gave cycling and walking tours as part of Bike Month and for visiting students, researchers and dignitaries.

• provided an educator workshop at the Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education that led to new schools getting involved as well as the initiation of Learn GreeNYC, an emerging coalition of sustainability professionals in education, design and enterprise in support of youth engagement, healthy learning environments and community-based approaches to low impact, high quality living.

• were thrilled when the very first Green Map ever published by a member of Green Map System’s Board of Director hit the newsstands. Brooklyn’s Ft. Greene and Clinton Hill Green Map is in the centerfold of November’s issue of The Hill and can be downloaded here (complete edition, 5 MB PDF), thanks to our Vice President, DK Holland and team!

• were so pleased to have new and continuing support, both financial and in terms of people-power (terrific interns, volunteers and pro bono professional help) for all of the above!

Our ongoing efforts are being felt citywide as the term the “Green Apple” coined by us back in 1991 moves into the mainstream of everyday conversation and action. Each of us has an important role, and we hope this website, our maps and related resources help you get involved.
